Biography
The right-handed batter was quite a prodigy growing up in the Sri Lankan school cricket system. With a compact technique and an aggressive mindset, Kusal Mendis was someone who caught your attention if you watched him bat for a while. He led Sri Lanka in the 2014 U19 World Cup and was soon elevated to the senior national team.
Having played a handful of first-class games, he made his Test debut in 2015 against West Indies. In only his 7th Test, he produced a magnificent knock of 176 runs against Australia, in a match where the second-highest score was 55. That established him as an international batter as he quickly got recognition through his white-ball game as well.
With over 7000 international runs for Sri Lanka, Mendis has become one of the key batters in this generation of his country’s cricket. With close to 3000 runs in T20 cricket, he is a dynamic batter and a promising prospect for the Pretoria Capitals in the inaugural SA20. He was an important member of the Asia Cup triumph for Sri Lanka in 2022. In that tournament and in the subsequent T20 World Cup in Australia, he showed all his class. With an aggressive style of batting in the powerplay and great glovework behind the stumps, Mendis will be a valuable asset for the Pretoria Capitals.
